Robert Wendell Miller was awarded a design patent in 1950 for this amphibian airplane. You can see the landing gear protracted on the side of the plane.

An evolved form of something quite similar which seem to be presently in prouction can be found here. All Composite too, but the key feature is the top mounted plant's location being able to control the centere of gravity. Without control it SHOULD stal level!
